J-54 portrait

J-54 never touches your cards. It changes what its own cards are worth, one condition at a time, and leaves you a little compute to rebuild the deck it deals from. The table sells nothing, so there is no shop.

Winning and losing

A run lasts 16 rounds and starts with 100 chips and a 52-card deck. You win at a settlement from round 9 on with 1.75 times your starting chips (the goal above), or by capturing the Joker (below). Going broke, or finishing round 16 without a win, loses.

The same deck lasts the whole run and is reshuffled every round; removed cards stay out. After every settlement J-54 adds 1 low card (2–6), so a deck you leave alone slowly gets worse.

Firmware: your build pick

At the start J-54 offers 3 firmwares and "No firmware". A firmware is one rule on your cards (or your bust line) for the whole run, paid at once from your starting chips.

Fives Firmware20 chipsYour 5s and 6s count 10.
Low Firmware40 chipsYour 2, 3 and 4 count 10.
Margin Firmware30 chipsYou bust only above 22.
Midrange Firmware50 chipsYour 4, 5 and 6 count 10.

J-54's program: conditions and camps

One condition is active at a time, for 2–4 rounds. It begins at the betting phase of its first round, is announced as a table event and shows in the rule list with the rounds left and its camp. Conditions only change J-54's card values or the total it stands on:

On the last round of a condition J-54 announces the next one's camp.

Compute and operations

You receive 2 compute when each round enters betting and can hold at most 8. Compute is spent only during betting, on three operations:

Cut1 compute
Hot Purge1 compute
Release the Joker6 compute

Cut removes 2 cards of one rank and colour you choose (each group shows its heat). Hot Purge removes 3 cards of a rank drawn at random among the 3 hottest, announced after you pay. Release puts the sealed Joker into the deck, once per run. The deck never shrinks below 16 cards; removed cards are listed in the Deck and Run tabs.

The heat map and the meter

The deck strip is coloured by heat: green means removing that rank helps you, red means keep it, darker for a larger effect. Heat is the change in your hand's win chance, in percentage points, per card removed. The meter under it is the deck's win chance per hand, with betting bands (50:10,55:20,60:30: win chance % : suggested stake % of your cash; below the first band the minimum bet). Both already include the active condition and your firmware and update after every operation. They show a direction, not a plan, and the suggestion never changes the bet range.

The Joker: capture

For you the Joker is a soft ace that never makes a natural. If you hold it at a settlement from round 9 on and the hand is not a loss (a win, push or natural; not a surrender), you win by capture. Earlier, or on a loss, it is shuffled back into the deck. When J-54 draws it, J-54 takes the next card instead, shuffles the Joker back and adds 1 low card. After release the meter shows the chance of drawing it each hand.

Sample bounty

With each condition J-54 names the rank it values most: the greenest rank on the heat map when the condition starts. Every card of that rank in your hand at settlement pays 2 chips, win or lose.

Playing tips

  • Spend your compute each round on the greenest group, then look again: the heat map is recalculated after every operation. Stored compute earns nothing while entropy keeps adding low cards.
  • Cut when one group clearly leads; Hot Purge when the top ranks are close, since it removes more cards for the same price but picks the rank at random.
  • When J-54 announces a switch to the anti camp, keep this round's compute: the map is about to flip, and what you would cut now may be what you want later.

A seeded run to follow: python -m chaos_blackjack.agent new --seed 28 --mode j54; the game's player guide walks through it step by step. The earlier demo version of this table is kept in the design history.
